Saint Patrick's Day

FAST FACTS

1. St. Patrick's Day is a cultural and religious festival celebrating the patron saint the day is named after.

2. St. Patrick's Day is the national holiday of Ireland and is usually celebrated on March 17.

3. It is believed St. Patrick, a Roman-Britain-born Christian missionary, was born in the late fourth century and is credited with bringing Christianity to the Irish people.

4. It is also believed St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland. However, post-glacial Ireland never actually had snakes. Many believe that the term "snakes" referred to the serpent symbolism of the Druids of that time and place. Today, there are no snakes to be found!.

5. Most people, whether they are Irish or not, wear green on this day. One of the Irish traditions is to pinch anyone who is not wearing green on St. Patrick's Day.

6. Corned beef and cabbage are traditional foods eaten on this festival.

7. The shamrock, pot-of-gold and leprechans are also associated with St. Patrick's Day. The shamrock was worn as a badge on the lapel. Three is Ireland's magic number and the three petals that make up the shamrock are supposed to bring good luck. The three leaves also represent the Trinity in the Christian religion.

8. The leprechaun is a small Irish fairy. He is dressed like a shoemaker, with pointed shoes and hat. He also wears a leather apron. Leprechauns are supposed to be unfriendly little men who lives alone in the forest, spending all of their time making shoes and guarding their treasures. If someone catches a leprechaun, he will be forced to tell where he hides all his pots of gold. However, the leprechaun must be watched at all times. If his captor looks away, the leprechaun will vanish along with his treasure.

9. St. Patrick's Day has become a festival all around the world and for one day out of the year anyone can be Irish and join in the celebration.

"For the Birds" (Short film-Video)

"For the Birds" is a 2000 computer animated short film produced by Pixar Animation Studios. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2001.

I'll tell you the story, but not the end!. A small bird lands on a telephone wire and makes itself comfortable, only to have a second bird land next to it. As the two birds start to fight, many others land on the wire and join in. They are interrupted when a very large and thin bird sits on top of the pole honks to them. Soon, the small birds start to make jokes of the large one by puffing up their feathers to resemble its plumage and imitating its honk. Then, they slide farther out along the wire and chatter suspiciously among themselves, ignoring the large bird's attempts to befriend them until it settles in the middle of all of them out on the wire. However, its weight causes the wire to sag almost to the ground and all the small birds slide down toward it. Let's watch it!.

"Pancake Day"

Today it is Pancake Day!!!. It is also known as "Shrove Tuesday" in Britain. Pancake day is the day before "Ash Wednesday" ("Miércoles de ceniza") and the start of "Lent" ("Cuaresma"). Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between 3rd February and 9th March. 'Shrove' (as in Shrove Tuesday) stems from old English word 'shrive', meaning "confess all sins". It is called Pancake Day because it is the day traditionally for eating pancakes as pancake recipes were a way to use up any stocks of milk, butter and eggs which were forbidden during the abstinence of Lent.
A pancake is a thin, flat cake, made of butter and fried in a pan.Caster sugar (superfine sugar) is sprinkled over the top and a dash of fresh lemon juice added. The pancake is then rolled. Some people add golden syrup or jam.

Also, people (adults and children) take part in pancake races in villages and towns in the United Kingdom. Here you can see some of these races!.

Zach and Reggie have a pancake party too!.
