For over 900 years, the Tower of London has been standing guard over the capital. As a Royal Palace, fortress, prison, place of execution, arsenal, Royal Mint (where money is madre), Royal Zoo and jewel house, it has witnessed many great events in British history.

The Tower of London was originally built by William the Conqueror, following his successful invasion of England in 1066.

The Tower of London is perhaps better known as a prison. 

The responsibility for looking after the prisoners was given to Beefeaters. They are guards. Nowadays, they work there as tourist guides, they care the ravens and defend the Crown Jewels. 

In the centre of the Tower of London is the famous White Tower. It is the oldest part of the fortress. 

As well as being a palace and a fortress, the Tower of London has also served as:

- The first Royal Armoury.

- Royal Mint (where money is made).

- Royal Observatory.

- Royal Zoo.

Today the Tower of London houses the Crown Jewels and is open to the public as a museum.

The Legend of The Ravens: 

Ravens have lived at the Tower of London for hundreds of years. Legend has it that if the ravens ever leave the Tower of London the White Tower will crumble and a great disaster shall befall England!. 

Poppies are placed every year at the Tower of London to mark 100 years since the start od World War 1 (28th  July 1914- 11th  November 1918).

"What's the Difference Between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England?"

Many people confuse the UK with Great Britain or the British Isles. 

So, let's see the differences!. 

The United Kingdom (UK)

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (to give its full name) refers to the political union between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The UK is a sovereign state, but the nations that make it up are also countries in their own right.

This is their flag: 

Great Britain

Great Britain is the official collective name of of England, Scotland and Wales and their associated islands. It does not include Northern Ireland and therefore should never be used interchangeably with ‘UK’!

Technically, if you lose the "Great", Britain only refers to England and Wales. Tricky!. 

British Isles

This is only a geographical term. It refers to the islands of Great Britain and Ireland (including the Republic of Ireland) and the 5000 or so smaller islands in their coasts. Remember this only refers to geography, not nationality, and while the Republic of Ireland is part of the British Isles, its people are not British. A very important distinction!. 

I hope that’s explained the very different meanings between UK, Great Britain and British Isles and why it’s important to use the right name at the right time. Geography really does matter!.

James Bond and and Queen Elisabeth London 2012 performance

Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of Queel Elisabeth II and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

It is located in the City of Westminster. The palace is often at the centre of state occasions and royal hospitality. 

The palace has 775 rooms, and the garden is the largest private garden in London. The state rooms, used for official and state entertaining, are open to the public each year for most of August and September, and on selected days in winter and spring.

The Royal Standard is flown at royal residences only when the Queen is present. If the Union Flag flies above Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle or Sandringham House it signals that the Queen is not in residence.
